“Within every patient there resides a doctor, and we as physicians are at our best when we put our patients in touch with the doctor inside themselves”
Celebrating 24+ years of Patient Care
Dr. Kerrilyn Chew, DOM
Medicine begins with learning how to see.
For more than 25 years, I have practiced and studied Chinese medicine—not simply as a system for treating illness, but as a way of understanding the human being.
Chinese medicine taught me to look for relationships: between symptoms that may initially seem unrelated, between the body and its environment, between physiology and emotion, between what has happened to us and how the body has adapted. It taught me that health is not a collection of isolated numbers or diagnoses. It is a living process.
That understanding continues to shape everything I do.
My work has expanded over the years through functional medicine, laboratory analysis, therapeutic ozone, light and energy-based therapies, nutrition, environmental health, emerging research and the many lessons that can only come from decades of working directly with people.
I remain deeply curious. I read. I research. I question. I experiment carefully. And I continue to return to an idea that has been at the heart of medicine for thousands of years:
The body is intelligent.
Ancient medicine. Modern inquiry. One human body.
I grew up surrounded by conventional medicine and later spent my adult life immersed in Chinese and natural medicine. Rather than seeing these worlds as mutually exclusive, I have always been fascinated by where different systems of knowledge illuminate one another.
Modern research gives us extraordinary new ways of looking at mitochondria, metabolism, hormones, the microbiome, the nervous system, light, circadian biology and cellular communication.
Chinese medicine gives us something equally valuable: a sophisticated framework for recognizing patterns, relationships, rhythms and changes in the whole person.
I am interested in both.
But I am perhaps most interested in what happens when we stop asking only, “What is wrong?” and begin asking better questions:
What is the body trying to do?
What changed?
What preceded this?
What is interfering with regulation?
What conditions would allow the body to function more intelligently again?
Those questions have guided much of my clinical life.
The clues are in the story.
I have never treated two people exactly alike.
A laboratory value matters. A diagnosis matters. But so does the story that came before it.
I want to know when things changed. What was happening beforehand. What improved something. What made it worse. How you sleep. How you eat. How you move. What your body has endured. What it responds to. And sometimes, what your own intuition has been quietly telling you all along.
The details matter because the person matters.
My role has never been to position myself as the ultimate authority over someone else’s body. At my best, I am a careful observer, an experienced practitioner, an investigator, an educator and a guide.
I want people to understand more—not less—about themselves.
Still learning.
After more than 25 years, I remain fascinated by the mystery of the human body.
My studies have taken me through Chinese medicine, acupuncture, bodywork, functional and natural medicine, ozone therapy and many emerging areas of health science. They have also taken me to China, India and Japan—and, perhaps most importantly, into a lifelong study of nature, consciousness and what it means to cultivate health.
I don't believe medicine should make us less connected to ourselves.
I believe it should make us more observant.
More discerning.
More capable of recognizing what supports life.
And perhaps a little more awed by the intelligence already present within us.
That is the medicine I continue to practice, study and teach.
